Gaviotas controladas por GPS

Qué comen, dónde pasan el tiempo, qué territorios explotan, donde vuelan… Dentro de unos anos lo sabremos casi todo sobre el comportamiento de las gaviotas patiamarillas. Ello será posible gracias a una alianza entre biólogos de la Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi y un equipo de ingenieros informáticos de la UPV, que han diseñado un dispositivo GPS que permite conocer la posición de las aves en cada momento.
Aranzadi mantiene desde 2005 una línea de investigación sobre esta gaviota, de alto interés en la gestión ambiental en Guipúzcoa, ya que se trata de una especie que ha dependido fuertemente de recursos alimenticios de origen humano, tales como los descartes pesqueros y la basura orgánica disponible en vertederos a cielo abierto. «Por ello, el conocimiento detallado de los movimientos de estos animales es fundamental para identificar las principales áreas de alimentación y, en consecuencia, las zonas del territorio claves para la especie», señalan desde la sociedad de ciencias y la propia UPV.
¿Y cómo se puede controlar un ave con tan elevada movilidad? La respuesta la dio la ciencia: mediante un GPS. Por ello, el departamento de Arquitectura y Tecnología de Computadores de la Facultad de Informática de la UPV y el de Ornitología de Aranzadi, han creado recientemente la empresa Wimbi Technologies S.L. (WimbiTek) que tiene entre sus objetivos ofrecer productos avanzados para el seguimiento de fauna a distancia.
De esta manera han creado un dispositivo GPS que se coloca sobre el dorso del ave mediante un arnés, recoge la ubicación exacta de la gaviota cada 30 minutos. Las posiciones se almacenan en una memoria interna del dispositivo. Posteriormente, dos veces al día, dicho dispositivo trata de comunicarse con una antena colocada en la colonia.
Si el ave está en el área de detección de la antena, los datos se descargan en un ordenador asociado a la mismas y son enviados a los investigadores vía internet.
La primera experiencia piloto de marcaje de aves se llevó a cabo con éxito durante la pasada primavera. En total se marcaron diez ejemplares adultos de gaviota, en una de las principales colonias de cría de Guipúzcoa. Durante algo más de dos meses se han obtenido miles de posiciones, que nos permiten conocer muy detalladamente los movimientos de estas aves.
En los próximos años, tanto la UPV como Aranzadi, confían en poder continuar con los estudios relativos a la distribución espacial de las gaviotas, máxime cuando la UE contempla el cierre total de los vertederos para el año 2020.
